Dachshund Dog Breed Guide: Small Legs, Big Personalities and Fascinating Facts!

Small in stature but enormous in personality, the Dachshund is one of the most recognisable and entertaining dog breeds around! With their long bodies, short legs and cheeky expressions, these lovable little dogs have captured hearts all over the world.

Affectionately known as sausage dogs, Dachshunds are courageous, intelligent and full of character. But behind those adorable faces lies a fascinating history and a surprisingly determined little hunter.

In this week’s Scamps & Champs Breed Spotlight, we’re taking a closer look at the wonderful Dachshund!

🐾 1. Dachshunds Were Originally Bred to Hunt Badgers

You might find it difficult to imagine your little sausage dog taking on a badger, but that’s exactly what Dachshunds were originally bred to do!

The breed originated in Germany, where their distinctive long bodies and short, powerful legs allowed them to follow badgers into underground burrows.

In fact, the name Dachshund comes from the German words Dachs, meaning badger, and Hund, meaning dog.

Their courage, determination and powerful sense of smell made them excellent hunting companions.

Today, these characteristics are still evident in many Dachshunds, particularly when they catch an interesting scent on their daily walk!

🌭 2. There Are Three Different Dachshund Coat Types

Not all sausage dogs look alike! Dachshunds come in three distinct coat varieties.

Smooth-haired Dachshunds have short, sleek coats that require relatively little grooming.

Long-haired Dachshunds have beautiful, flowing coats with feathering around their ears, legs and tails. They need regular brushing to prevent tangles.

Wire-haired Dachshunds have coarse, wiry coats, bushy eyebrows and distinctive little beards that give them a wonderfully scruffy appearance.

Each variety has its own charm, and all three share the characteristic Dachshund shape.

🔊 3. They Have Surprisingly Big Barks!

If you’ve ever met a Dachshund, you’ll know that their bark can be surprisingly loud for such a small dog!

Historically, their voices helped hunters locate them when they were working underground.

Today, Dachshunds can be enthusiastic watchdogs, often alerting their owners to visitors, unfamiliar noises or the occasional squirrel in the garden.

Early socialisation and reward-based training can help prevent excessive barking from becoming a problem.

🛏️ 4. Dachshunds Are Champion Blanket Burrowers

Does your Dachshund disappear underneath the duvet at bedtime?

You’re certainly not alone!

Many Dachshunds love burrowing into blankets, cushions and cosy beds.

This behaviour may be linked to their history of working underground, although seeking warmth and comfort also plays a part.

Just make sure your little companion can easily get out from underneath their blankets and doesn’t become overheated.

🧠 5. They’re Clever but Can Be Stubborn

Dachshunds are intelligent dogs who often know exactly what they want!

Their independent nature comes from generations of being bred to work and make decisions while hunting.

This can sometimes make training a little challenging, particularly when there’s an interesting scent to investigate.

However, Dachshunds respond well to positive reinforcement, patience and consistency.

Short, enjoyable training sessions using tasty rewards, toys and praise can help keep them motivated.

And remember, what might look like stubbornness is often simply a dog finding something else more rewarding!

🐿️ 6. They Have a Strong Prey Drive

Despite their cute appearance, Dachshunds are true hunting dogs at heart.

Many have a strong instinct to chase small animals, investigate scents and dig.

This means a squirrel running across the park can be incredibly exciting!

Providing appropriate outlets for these natural behaviours is important for their wellbeing.

Activities such as scent games, treat searches, puzzle feeders and supervised digging opportunities can be fantastic ways to keep a Dachshund mentally stimulated.

Because their hunting instincts can be powerful, reliable recall training and appropriate lead management are particularly important.

❤️ 7. Dachshunds Form Strong Bonds With Their Families

Dachshunds may be independent thinkers, but they’re also known for being affectionate and loyal companions.

Many develop particularly close relationships with their owners and love being involved in family life.

Whether they’re following you around the house, curling up beside you on the sofa or demanding another cuddle, Dachshunds certainly know how to make their presence felt!

However, their attachment to their families means some can struggle when left alone.

Gradually teaching them to feel comfortable spending short periods independently can help prevent separation-related problems.

🐕 8. Dachshunds Need Exercise Too!

It’s easy to assume that those tiny legs don’t need much exercise, but Dachshunds are surprisingly active little dogs.

Regular walks, opportunities to sniff and explore, and mentally stimulating activities are important for keeping them happy and healthy.

Exercise requirements vary depending on age, health and individual fitness.

Because of their long backs, it’s particularly important to keep Dachshunds at a healthy weight and build their fitness gradually.

🩺 9. Their Backs Need Special Care

One of the most important things prospective Dachshund owners should understand is the breed’s increased risk of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).

IVDD occurs when one or more of the discs between the vertebrae become damaged or displaced, potentially causing pain, nerve problems and, in severe cases, paralysis.

Not every Dachshund develops IVDD, but their body shape makes them particularly susceptible.

Owners can help support their dog’s spinal health by:

  • Maintaining a healthy body weight.

  • Encouraging regular, appropriate exercise to build and maintain muscle strength.

  • Avoiding repeated high-impact activities and uncontrolled jumping.

  • Using ramps or steps where appropriate.

  • Supporting the chest and hindquarters when lifting their dog.

  • Seeking veterinary advice promptly if they notice back pain, weakness or changes in movement.

Sudden weakness, inability to walk or loss of bladder control requires emergency veterinary attention.

🐾 10. Dachshunds Have Huge Personalities!

Perhaps the most entertaining thing about Dachshunds is their confidence.

They may be small, but many seem completely unaware of their size!

They’re curious, playful, determined and often wonderfully mischievous.

Whether they’re stealing your favourite seat, refusing to come inside because they’ve discovered an interesting smell, or burrowing underneath the duvet, life with a Dachshund is rarely dull.

It’s no wonder these little dogs have such a devoted following!

Is a Dachshund the Right Dog for You?

Dachshunds can make wonderful companions for the right household, but it’s important to understand their needs before welcoming one into your family.

They generally thrive with owners who can provide consistent, reward-based training, regular exercise, mental stimulation and plenty of companionship.

Their strong hunting instincts, independent personalities and potential back problems are all important considerations.

With appropriate care, patience and understanding, a Dachshund can be a loving and entertaining addition to the family.
