How Can You Keep Your Pets Cool During Summer?

It’s extremely important to ensure you’re well prepared during hot weather to keep your animal companions safe and cool. Here are some tips that will help you keep your pets cool and calm when the summer turns the thermostat all the way up!

Minimise direct sunlight

All pets should be kept in the shade as much as possible when the sun is shining at its most intense. It is recommended that you keep pets indoors on the hottest days. If you’re feeling hot, it’s pretty safe to assume your pets are too.

Keep them hydrated

You must provide plenty of cool, fresh water for your pets, preferably in large water containers. Consider providing multiple sources of water, as one may get spilt or soiled. Keep containers out of direct sunlight, and you could even add some ice to keep the water cool.

Don’t forget the little ones

Small pets like guinea pigs, rabbits and birds are quite vulnerable to over-heating. When the weather gets hot, keep them indoors if possible. If they can get a free run on a cool, tiled surface this can be helpful, otherwise drape their cages with wet towels and provide plenty of cold water. Protect them from direct sunlight at all times.

Paddling pools

If you have one, consider putting a paddling pool in the shade in your garden; dogs love taking a quick dip to cool down. Remember to take the necessary precautions for the safety of children, if you have them.

Hot cars

Never, EVER leave your pet in the car on a hot day. It can take as little as a few minutes for an animal to suffer a painful death when left in a hot car. If you see an animal locked in a hot car on the street, you should call the local emergency number on 999 to report it.

Animals suffer just as much as we do in the heat, and it is your responsibility to keep them healthy and happy. Don’t ignore the needs of your furry, scaled or feathered friend in the summer – take all the steps necessary to help them stay cool!
