Can Animals Get Coronavirus? – How to Care for Your Pets during Self-Isolation!

Can Animals Get Coronavirus? - Scamps & Champs

Whilst the human world adjusts to the ever changing news headlines on the Coronavirus pandemic and prepares for self-isolating, there remains uncertainty surrounding our pets and what this means for them. The Government and health authorities have issued advice on how to minimise risk of infection for ourselves, but what about our beloved furry friends? What happens if we have Coronavirus and need to self-isolate with our pets, can they get Coronavirus?

Here at Scamps & Champs Chichester we would like to help answer some of these questions for you and provide you and your pets with support, during this difficult, confusing and uncertain time. Please find out pet care advice for self-isolation below.

Can My Pets Get Coronavirus?

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause serious illness in humans and in some extremely rare cases animals. However, there is no evidence that companion animals such as pets can spread COVID-19.

How Should I Look After My Pets Whilst Social Distancing?

The RSPCA are urging pet owners not to panic and abandon their pets. If you haven’t tested positive for the virus then they advise you to interact and exercise your pets as you normally would but to adopt a hygienic approach of washing bedding frequently and washing your hands after feeding and interacting with your pets. They also advise the following key points:

  • Try and avoid your pets kissing or licking you.
  • Don’t share food with your pets.
  • Ensure if your pet is on medication that you have adequate supplies at home, in case you need to self-isolate.
  • Speak to your vet or doctor for more advice if you are concerned in anyway.
  • Keep exercising dogs as normal. You can go outside for a walk when social distancing, however Government guidance advises keeping two metres away from other humans.

What if I Have Coronavirus & I Have Pets to Care For?

If you are ill then the best advice is to limit your contact with your pets and ask one of your family members to care for them whilst you recover. In addition, follow the bullet points above and maintain a rigorous hygienic approach as standard. However, some people may not have this as an option due to living alone and therefore we advise contacting a pet care company who provide; pet sitting, dog home boarding or dog walking. So that you can recover whilst self-isolating, but ensuring that your pet is cared for outside of your home and that your dog is walked and exercised. Ultimately you need to self-isolate but your pets don’t as they don’t carry risk of spreading the infection.

Our team members so are:

Mike Parham – East Wittering

Mikes is the name, dog boarding our game!

We are a family of three, Mike, Ksenia and Anarella (7) we live in West Sussex.

We have a great passion for our four-legged friends, as a child I grew up always with a German Shepard around and in adult life, until recently, there has always been one or even two at times, with the occasional Irish Wolf and even a Cavalier King Charles (slight diversity there!)

I have to admit that we currently do not have any dogs of our own. I have been reluctant despite family pressure to own another dog as the memories of losing one’s best friend is always so heart breaking, something you, animal lovers, no doubt will appreciate

So here we are! Scamps & Champs dog boarders!

Cyra Shepherd – Fishbourne

Cyra has just joined our home boarding team at Scamps and Champs Chichester. She has a lovely home that she shares with Ernie, her lovely golden Labrador and her family.  We are thrilled she has come on board and know that she will be a real team player. Cyra says:

“I love dogs. This is an ideal job for me where I look forward to welcoming them into our home, in a safe and loving environment for them to enjoy, so the owners can relax and feel confident that their dog is well cared for while they are away.”

Carla Campbell – Nutbourne

My name is Carla and a really excited to join Sarah at Scamps and Champs Chichester. I am a very happy, friendly and energetic person. I’m a big animal enthusiast and have studied animal care at college to achieve my higher national certificate. I love all animals but my main passion is for dogs.

Having grown up with a variety of dogs from Rottweiler’s and German Shepherds to Dachshunds and Chihuahuas. I couldn’t imagine my life without them. I have a little Cockapoo called Daisy who is my world. We enjoy lovely walks around the local villages where we live. Emsworth, Nutbourne and Bosham are among our favourites. I love walking and exploring new places for dog walks.

I can’t wait to start looking after your pets in Chichester and bring Scamps and Champs to the South Coast.

Jane Mason – Pagham

I’m Jane and I have lived with and cared for animals of all types and sizes for over half a century!

I teach animal care and management at a local college and have a particular interest in animal/owner bonding.

I am happy to be working with Sarah and her team and look forward to getting to meet new pets and their owners around the South Downs area.

A Gunner Family Investing in the Local Community

Dog Walking in Chichester, Dog Home Boarding in Chichester, Pet Care Services in Chichester

Sarah Davies has recently set up Scamps and Champs Chichester, a hugely successful national pet service franchise. Sarah is keen to invest in her local area and our community and is hiring people to provide a variety of pet services.

Of her new business Sarah says; “The response to my adverts from local people to get involved and offer our pet services has been tremendous.  The local communities of Chichester are really taking an interest and I hope to employ many local people to provide our pet services.”

Sarah is set to marry Leon, a Royal Artillery Officer in August.  Leon was recently based at Thorney island and after falling love with the south coast, they now live permanently in the area.  Chichester has strong links with the Royal Artillery and the local regiments attend the Remembrance Parade each year with a strong veteran following. There are also local links from as far back as World War One.

West Sussex County Council is also proud to be part of Forces Connect South East, a cross-border partnership comprising: Surrey, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex and Hampshire county councils; Brighton and Hove and Medway councils; and the NHS.

Sarah has worked for a number of years co-ordinating the Royal Artillery Association, aka The Gunners Veteran Association, providing much needed welfare and support to our veterans and their families. Despite her busy work schedule, she made the decision to branch out and start her own Pet Service business and ensure it a community-based business. Sarah even offers all members of the armed forces a continuing 5% discount on pet care services at Scamps and Champs Chichester.

Sarah is keen to make local connections with other businesses in the community and says; “I am really excited and want to get in touch with animal charities in the local area and offer support and fundraising.  It is really important to include the local businesses and offer promotions through some independent cafes and shops.  I would like Scamps and Champs Chichester to become a local business with reach into the local and wider community.”

So, what is Scamps & Champs all about then? Scamps and Champs are one of the countries top pet care services, offering a professional level of pet-sitting and dog-walking excellence, within the animal care sector. All of our wedding packages are bespoke and can be tailored to your individual requirements. Your cat or dog can be involved in as little or as much of your special day as you like. It is important that we meet your needs but that we also work together to meet the personality and requirements of your pet too. We recognise that a wedding venue is an unfamiliar environment for your furry friend and we therefore want to be there to support them every step of the way.

In addition, where possible we will try and maintain your cat or dog’s usual routine. We will ensure they are exercised before leaving, that they eat at their usual meal times and have their favourite food with them. Water will also be available at all times. We will try and encourage you to select a quiet zone for your pet at the wedding venue, which can be as simple as a small side room. This so that we can bring some of your cat or dogs home comforts along with them, such as their bed, a blanket or some of their favourite toys. This is also so that if the ceremony becomes too busy or overwhelming for them, we can take them back to their quiet room and settle them comfortably.
