Is your Dog Home Boarder Licenced?

It was a great step forward last week when I could finally apply for a Reigate Home Boarders licence with Reigate and Banstead council, believe me it has been a long and arduous task and I am sure I am not alone.

At Scamps and Champs we are championing the right, just and appropriate way your animals are looked after which is why we are adhering to all the Defra Regulations which went into effect from October 2018.

I have been slowly building an animal loving team to provide Reigate dog walking, cat feeding and pet sitting services and am know looking for the right people to become host families for our Reigate Dog Home Boarding.

Lots of people will know me from walking the various popular local places with my dogs over the years. When I talk to people of my hopes in slowly building a respected local pet care name, under the Scamps and Champs brand, I am surprised at how few are aware of the new regulations and therefore may be unwittingly leaving their dogs with an unlicensed person therefore, leaving themselves at risk as there will be no insurance in place should anything happen not something I would personally be happy with.

At Scamps and Champs Reigate you can rest assured that your dog will be being looked after by a host family where they have been fully vetted by ourselves and fit the new regulations but I think most importantly will have fabulous 1 on 1 care as we will only be boarding dogs from the same family. Your dogs will not be boarded with any other families’ dogs.

As a potential customer you will be given the chance to meet your Reigate Dog Home Boarder to see where your loved ones will be staying to give you complete peace of mind while you are away.

Finally if you or anyone you know would be interested in becoming one of my host families please do get in touch for an informal discussion.

Please do get in touch for all your Reigate pet care needs and hopefully we can help you out.

A Fantastic Dog Walk – from one of the Most Dog Friendly Pubs in the U.K. the Skimmington Castle Pub Reigate

Start at the Skimmington Castle Pub.

If you are heading out or a Reigate dog walk chances are you will want to head somewhere you can stop off for lunch and refreshments and you won’t find a more welcoming and friendly place than the “Skim”.

The Staff are always friendly even Rob the manager! Seriously Terri and the team do a great job and always welcome Reigate Dog Walkers and they have their own lovely dog Skimmy!

The food is delicious and they have just updated their menu and the famous Ribs are back on and my wife’s favourite the Vegetable Tagine!

There is a great selection of cask ales and to my pleasure have just taken on serving ales from Surrey Hills Brewery. And for those Gin lovers there is a great array and they have some from the localish Silent Pool Gin Distillery which is where the lovely barmaid Virginia also works

There are many good Reigate dog walks to and from the Skims door but I will let you know a great circular favourite one of mine to walk off the excess of those lovely Ribs and pint of Surrey Hills Shere Drop or do to begin with and treat yourself afterwards.

Walk round the front of this pub and past the front door you will see a path which goes between the pub and a cottage this part the greensand way. Keep walking up here, it is well covered by trees, a few yards up you may hear a parrot, this is the old nursery, which has been sold now but, the parrot in its cage was still there a couple of weeks ago!

It is said that Sir Winston’s Churchill’s parrot resided here on its last years. To your left you will see a walled garden this used to be the country home of the Film Mogul Arthur Rank (remember the big Gong?) Lots of movie stars from time gone by would spend time here. Keep walking and at the end you will see a lovely cottage, turn right here down the greensand way. Once at the bottom put the dogs on leads then head up the drive and cross the road.

You can now head up the sandy path and this will take you to the back of the Golf Club. Walk round the front and you will be afforded some of the best views in Surrey, you can walk round and have a look at the old windmill I told you about earlier which is now used as a church. Once you have taken in the view walk down the hill across the golf course and walk between the newly renovated cottage and the golf course practice green you are still on the greensand way. Walk along this path with its pretty views until you meet a little stream.

At this stream head on the path to the right and you will come out to an open arable farm field. Keep walking around the edge of this field and here you reach the footpath field path keep heading round right and head toward the corner of the field you will enter a good covered path running alongside some very overgrown gardens and a small field keep walking and you will come to the A25 again keep heading right and cross over a small private drive and after a short distance you will come to another private drive turn right here and then head slightly left at the sand path onto the heath golf course again.

Keep going ahead and then cross between the trees over the other fairway and you will see an opening half way up. Put the hounds on their leads and cross over Flanchford road and then you will see the Skim ahead of you of course please look out for golfers and cars on this wonderful Reigate dog walk.

Pet Care in Reigate

Scamps and Champs Pet Care Reigate the first few months

Where does the time go, I am sitting here on a very sunny Sunday afternoon 24/02/2019 in Reigate thinking what a difference a year makes.

This time last year the beast from the east was on its way and I was facing the toughest decision of my life in knowing I was going to have to put my beloved Charlie dog to sleep, we said goodbye to him on the 28th February 2018. This was after a terrible 2 years in which I lost my very dear friend John to cancer he was only 39. I then lost my other springer spaniel Jakey, then, a  few months later , in the May of 2017 I lost my dear dad and in July 2018 I also lost my brother. All of these sudden and massive life changing events!

Well a year on with the sun shining, I am a few months into setting up Scamps and Champs pet care Reigate and it’s been a rollercoaster of a learning curve and we haven’t even scratched the surface! The main focus has been on building my team and I think we have found a really great nucleus and a couple have been introduced on Facebook namely Jennie who is providing our pet care service in Dorking and surrounding areas.

Jennie is a zoology graduate and has animal experience that most of us could only dream of. Having spent time in Africa as part of her degree. I also have Tracy who lives in Lower Kingswood and is providing pet care in Reigate and Redhill at the moment but as soon as we get business over “her side of the M25” I am sure she will be happy to cover that. Tracy’s love of animals is obvious to see and she grew up around dogs with her dad breeding spaniels so she has experience of training and handling the most excitable of hounds!

The latest recruits are Kimberley who lives in Reigate who has already stepped in to cover some of our clients’ requirements and has a huge amount of pet care experience with her previous work with animal shelters and has a fantastic knack of stopping those dogs from pulling!

I also have Andrew who for a main job is a magician (https://www.andrewkellymagic.com/) but he will make sure your pets don’t disappear! He grew up with all sorts of pets too many to mention but his kind loving nature is there for all to see. There are some very recent recruits too and I will introduce these as soon as I can!

For your peace of mind, all of our pet care team in Reigate are fully insured and policed checked.

I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my family especially my long suffering wife Caroline and my daughter Jessica and of course not forgetting our new dog Bonnie who is now 9 months, talking of time flying.

And with that I want to enjoy some of the nice weather so with my daughter in her bike gear and my wife in her running gear I will be catching them up with Bonnie for a walk to Reigate Heath to wear ourselves out! Might even stop for a drink at the famous extremely dog friendly Skimmington Castle!

If after you’ve enjoyed the sunshine, would like to discuss your pets care please contact me at reigate@scampsandchamps.co.uk or via our online form which you can find HERE
