Is your Dog Home Boarder Licenced?

It was a great step forward last week when I could finally apply for a Reigate Home Boarders licence with Reigate and Banstead council, believe me it has been a long and arduous task and I am sure I am not alone.

At Scamps and Champs we are championing the right, just and appropriate way your animals are looked after which is why we are adhering to all the Defra Regulations which went into effect from October 2018.

I have been slowly building an animal loving team to provide Reigate dog walking, cat feeding and pet sitting services and am know looking for the right people to become host families for our Reigate Dog Home Boarding.

Lots of people will know me from walking the various popular local places with my dogs over the years. When I talk to people of my hopes in slowly building a respected local pet care name, under the Scamps and Champs brand, I am surprised at how few are aware of the new regulations and therefore may be unwittingly leaving their dogs with an unlicensed person therefore, leaving themselves at risk as there will be no insurance in place should anything happen not something I would personally be happy with.

At Scamps and Champs Reigate you can rest assured that your dog will be being looked after by a host family where they have been fully vetted by ourselves and fit the new regulations but I think most importantly will have fabulous 1 on 1 care as we will only be boarding dogs from the same family. Your dogs will not be boarded with any other families’ dogs.

As a potential customer you will be given the chance to meet your Reigate Dog Home Boarder to see where your loved ones will be staying to give you complete peace of mind while you are away.

Finally if you or anyone you know would be interested in becoming one of my host families please do get in touch for an informal discussion.

Please do get in touch for all your Reigate pet care needs and hopefully we can help you out.

A Fantastic Dog Walk – from one of the Most Dog Friendly Pubs in the U.K. the Skimmington Castle Pub Reigate

Start at the Skimmington Castle Pub.

If you are heading out or a Reigate dog walk chances are you will want to head somewhere you can stop off for lunch and refreshments and you won’t find a more welcoming and friendly place than the “Skim”.

The Staff are always friendly even Rob the manager! Seriously Terri and the team do a great job and always welcome Reigate Dog Walkers and they have their own lovely dog Skimmy!

The food is delicious and they have just updated their menu and the famous Ribs are back on and my wife’s favourite the Vegetable Tagine!

There is a great selection of cask ales and to my pleasure have just taken on serving ales from Surrey Hills Brewery. And for those Gin lovers there is a great array and they have some from the localish Silent Pool Gin Distillery which is where the lovely barmaid Virginia also works

There are many good Reigate dog walks to and from the Skims door but I will let you know a great circular favourite one of mine to walk off the excess of those lovely Ribs and pint of Surrey Hills Shere Drop or do to begin with and treat yourself afterwards.

Walk round the front of this pub and past the front door you will see a path which goes between the pub and a cottage this part the greensand way. Keep walking up here, it is well covered by trees, a few yards up you may hear a parrot, this is the old nursery, which has been sold now but, the parrot in its cage was still there a couple of weeks ago!

It is said that Sir Winston’s Churchill’s parrot resided here on its last years. To your left you will see a walled garden this used to be the country home of the Film Mogul Arthur Rank (remember the big Gong?) Lots of movie stars from time gone by would spend time here. Keep walking and at the end you will see a lovely cottage, turn right here down the greensand way. Once at the bottom put the dogs on leads then head up the drive and cross the road.

You can now head up the sandy path and this will take you to the back of the Golf Club. Walk round the front and you will be afforded some of the best views in Surrey, you can walk round and have a look at the old windmill I told you about earlier which is now used as a church. Once you have taken in the view walk down the hill across the golf course and walk between the newly renovated cottage and the golf course practice green you are still on the greensand way. Walk along this path with its pretty views until you meet a little stream.

At this stream head on the path to the right and you will come out to an open arable farm field. Keep walking around the edge of this field and here you reach the footpath field path keep heading round right and head toward the corner of the field you will enter a good covered path running alongside some very overgrown gardens and a small field keep walking and you will come to the A25 again keep heading right and cross over a small private drive and after a short distance you will come to another private drive turn right here and then head slightly left at the sand path onto the heath golf course again.

Keep going ahead and then cross between the trees over the other fairway and you will see an opening half way up. Put the hounds on their leads and cross over Flanchford road and then you will see the Skim ahead of you of course please look out for golfers and cars on this wonderful Reigate dog walk.

Not Simply a Dog Walking Service – Pet Care in Reigate Offers you Advice for your Pets in the Heat!

Well what a beautiful Easter weather we are having but whilst it makes all the difference to us humans and raises those spirits from the gloomy winter months. Please do remember the effect it has on your much loved pets, something I and the Scamps and Champs Reigate team are so conscious of and make sure all our clients have the support if they you unable to be there during the day. The continuing changeable weather also makes it challenging for pets to acclimatise to the heat, making sudden, un-seasonal hot spells even more dangerous.

Dogs rely on panting as their main method of cooling – but it only controls body temperature up to a point. As temperatures and humidity rise, panting is no longer able to cool them and it can lead to potentially fatal heatstroke. I am sure by now we are all well aware of the dangers of leaving dogs in cars during warm weather, but Scamps and Champs Reigate pet care services just wanted to reiterate with some handy advice on keeping your pets safe when the temperatures rise.

Don’t leave animals in cars even in the shade, car temperatures can increase quickly and as the sun moves and shade disappears the internal car temperature will rapidly increase. Leaving windows partially open has little effect on car temperature, Instead, if you are stuck in traffic or travelling, have the air conditioning on to keep the car cool and make sure windows are shaded from direct sunlight. Ideally, leave your dog at home in hot weather, however be conscious that conservatories and greenhouses can have similar affects to cars.

Avoid the hottest part of the day it’s best for pets not to stay outside in the hottest part of the day. Take dogs for walks in cooler parts of the day in the early morning or evening and avoid any strenuous exercise in the heat. Cats need shade and water too in fact all pets need access to cool water and shade to keep their temperature down don’t forget your small furries like rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs. If your pet is unfit, obese or suffers from a respiratory disorder, you should be particularly careful exercising in hot or humid conditions.

You should ideally make sure you supervise activity as pets themselves won’t know when to stop in the sun. Scamps and Champs Reigate dog walking and pet care services will be happy to help with this even if it is just to pop in to check up on your loved ones and make sure they are keeping cool.

What to do if you suspect your pet has heatstroke Signs: Rapid, heavy breathing, lack of energy, decreased urine production, bulging eyes, and the tongue appearing long and dark red. Vomiting and/or diarrhoea can follow. If you think your dog has heatstroke, get it to a vet as quickly as possible. Avoid using ice or very cold water as this can cause blood vessels on the skin surface to constrict and reduce effective cooling. It can also cause shivering which can create more heat from the muscles. Key areas to cool are the neck, abdomen and inner thighs with lukewarm water or water-soaked towels. It is important that you do not over cool your dog, as this can lead to shock – a lack of blood supply to vital organs – so using lukewarm water is important. Out and about, cool surfaces, shade, air conditioning in cars and fans can also aid cooling. Even if the dog is cooled, veterinary treatment is still key to allow more targeted treatment and monitoring to occur.

I am sure all your pets are always looked after and you would never allow them to be overheated but I just wanted to put this together so you know if you are having to go out and you are worried and you have pets in the Reigate, Redhill, Banstead, Dorking and surrounding villages please do get in touch and Scamps and Champs Reigate branch will do all we can to help.

“Hello! I am Cintia and I am passionate about animals. My love for them defines who I am today, I am also a local artist, a ceramicist. I come from Argentina, where I grew up surrounded by animals, mainly  dogs and  cats, but I also had hamsters, ducks,  rabbits, tortoises, even a fox I had! Stray dogs followed me everywhere, as I couldn’t resist cuddling, stroking and feeding them whenever possible!

Today I am the lucky owner of Willow, a Jack Russell crossed with Shih Tzu who I love dearly and on a regular basis I look after Bunji, rescued from the streets of Spain, my sister’s dog. I have also come forward for fostering dogs saved from the Asian meat trade!

I am really loving being part of Scamps & Champs through whom I had the opportunity to meet and look after ‘Danny’! I can’t wait to see what the future brings with this new adventure…Thank you Simon!”

Dog Walking Reigate – it’s a walk in the park!

Reigate must be one of the most dog populated towns in the UK if visiting Priory Park is anything to go by.  As the nights lighten, evening dog walking in Reigate will start to increase. Priory Park is just outside the main town of Reigate and is great for dog walking and you can walk straight into it from Morrison’s Supermarket car park. Once there you can’t help but notice the sense of family, community and Reigate dog lovers!!

This walk starts by the very dog friendly, “pistachios in the park” café , you can’t miss the big glass round building, but more about this later!

This great dog walking in Reigate starts at the front of the café, if you look straight ahead you can see the beacon. This is lit on special occasions, the last one being to commemorate 100 years since the end of WW1 a few months back. Slightly to the left of the beacon you will see a big opening, head to this. Once here you will see a handy dog poo bin if needed. Now go straight up and you will notice the ground becoming sandy, in a while you will be joining the Greensand Way!

At the top of this hill you will see a bench where you  and your dog can take a rest as you will soon be heading up again! From here, with your back to the park, you have 2 options going right, you will see an opening between the trees this is the Greensand Way which can get muddy or you can walk just a few feet more and take a more stable path but both will take you to the top of the park and you will see a monument explaining how some posh folk bequeathed the park to the common folk!

From here keep walking along and to your left you will see fantastic views over towards Gatwick Airport and Sussex beyond to the South Downs and, after a nice walk for a few hundred yards, you will come to a big opening on the right with views over Reigate onto the North Downs way, there are a couple of benches and again some handy poo bins (see how catered they are for the hounds), why not take in the scenery!

From here keep walking straight on and you will see another poo bin, you should bear right here and down the hill. Once at the bottom turn left and after a few yards you will see a set of steep steps down. Put the dog(s) on their leads and head down and cross over down the road opposite. If you look to your right you will see a windmill in the distance, you are heading to that. I would keep the dogs on the lead for now as you head down the road and past some stables * (see below)  and once you have walked past some houses on your right and one on your left, head on.

You will cross over a stream where your dogs can have a welcome cool off it its hot! After this keep walking you will come to a bit of an opening and there are 3 paths you want to take the one straight up the hill and you will be going along an old drovers way watch out for horses! Keep walking up and then down this path and you will soon see the back of a building which is the Skimmington Castle Pub, probably the most dog friendly pub in the world if you want stop off, but, there will be more about this with Rob and his team in another article!

Walk round the front of this pub and past the front door you will see a path which goes between the pub and a cottage this again is the greensand way.

Basically you can spend some time walking around this heathland but, beware of golfers. I will be talking more about other walks around here another time.

By now you should think about heading back just retrace your steps above.

At the stables, I mentioned earlier (*) you can go up again if you are feeling fit or take the flatter route to your left. You will have to open the big five bar gate but, remember to close it! You will now be walking between fields with horses in so be aware. At the end of this path is an allotment. Put your dogs on leads again and head over the road back into Priory Park.

Be aware you are now coming into the back of the park where there is a big pond just in case your dogs are prone to chase ducks! Walk around the paths or over the fields back towards Pistachios café where you started. Once here Gabby and the team will be able to tempt you with all sorts of delights, your hounds can go inside if it’s a wet day or plenty of spaces to sit outside if nice. It is a wonderful café and spot and Gabby is great! I have said I will put a link to her café here https://pistachiosinthepark.org.uk/priory-park/ .

I hope you enjoy this read and Reigate dog walking. Come back for more dog and pet friendly articles coming soon.

Best wishes Simon and the Team of Reigate Scamps and Champs.
